Augusta University
School of Computer and Cyber Sciences
invites applications and nominations for
a full-time, tenure-track
Assistant Professor
in Information Technology

Augusta University, a highly respected, comprehensive research institution and premier health center of the University System of Georgia, announces a national search for a tenure-track, full-time Assistant Professor in Information Technology. Applications and nominations are being accepted.

Complete information is available in the Search Profilehttp://www.myersmcrae.com/skins/userfiles/files/AU-AP-IT.pdf

The Opportunity - Georgia is listed among the top ten states for information technology jobs. With Augusta being home to the National Security Agency Georgia (NSAG), the Cyber Center of Excellence at Fort Gordon, and future home of United States Army Cyber Command, the area is poised for explosive growth. Projected workforce needs far exceed current capacity, especially in cybersecurity, information technology, and computer science.

In June 2015, Augusta University announced a major commitment to address the needs in this field and launched its Cyber Institute. Since its inception, the Cyber Institute has worked with colleges across the university to establish undergraduate and graduate programs in Cybersecurity, Information Security Management, Intelligence and Security Studies, and Healthcare Information Security. In addition to these new academic programs, the Cyber Institute has helped generate over $1 million in funded research and Augusta University’s designation as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) in 2016.

State and federal elected officials have encouraged Augusta University to continue to advance quickly and expand our existing education and research missions in the areas of computer science, information technology and cybersecurity. In January of 2017, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal announced $60 million in funding to establish the Hull-McKnight Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center in Augusta. Opening in July 2018, this state-owned, state-of-the-art facility is designed to bring academic, private industry, and government together to improve workforce training opportunities and spur innovation.

To better align its existing academic resources and to leverage this new facility and the collaborative opportunities it offers, Augusta University has established the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences (SCCS). The school brings together all of Augusta University’s existing Computer Science, Information Technology, and Cybersecurity programs, unifying the mission and vision of these programs.

To achieve its vision, the School of Computer and Cyber Sciences needs to grow. It is seeking to add additional faculty to expand its information technology programs.

Areas of Interest - Augusta University’s IT programs seek to convey a broad-base set of technical knowledge and skills to its students, including networking, software development, data analytics, systems integration, management, operations, and cybersecurity. Through concentrations, students can optionally hone a skill set or gain a broader understanding of environments in which IT is applied.

Augusta University is seeking individuals who have interests and expertise across a wide range of IT related disciplines, but is especially interested in the areas of:

  • System Automation / Scripting (Python and PowerShell)
  • Operating System Concepts
  • Operating System Administration (Linux and Windows)
  • Enterprise and Cloud Systems
  • Introductory and Advanced Networking Concepts
  • System Analysis and Design
  • Software Development Processes
  • Database Management Systems
  • Data Analytics
  • Principles of Human-Computer Interaction
  • Cyber Security Fundamentals

Position Requirements - Applicants should have a desire for a balanced academic focus. An Assistant Professor should expect a teaching load of five or six course sections per year. Rigorous academic research, the production of peer-reviewed articles and presentations, and the creation of state-of-the-art technical artifacts are also highly-valued, and thus between 30 percent and 40 percent of an Assistant Professor’s efforts will be dedicated to research and professional development.

Minimum Requirements

  • Hold, or receive before start of employment, a terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D.) in computer science, information technology, information systems, or closely related field
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a stream of quality, peer-reviewed intellectual contributions in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated capability or strong potential for teaching excellence in information technology
  • Ability and motivation to develop, manage, and deliver the curriculum for information technology courses. Interest and experience in online and hybrid-online delivery is a plus

Augusta University - Founded in 1828, Augusta University, formerly Georgia Regents University, is one of only four public comprehensive research institutions in the state of Georgia. More than 8,500 students are enrolled in classes offered on campus and online. Programs emphasize creativity, critical thinking and problem solving both inside and outside the classroom, even expanding the learning experience around the globe.

Enrolled for Fall 2017 were 876 freshmen, 4,415 other undergraduates, 1,635 graduate students, 1,293 first professionals, and 605 medical and dental residents. Out of the 8,824 students, 5,472 (62 percent) are female.

The university offers 141 academic programs across its ten colleges and schools: College of Allied Health Sciences; Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Hull College of Business; Dental College of Georgia; College of Education; The Graduate School; College of Nursing; College of Science and Mathematics; Medical College of Georgia; and School of Computer and Cyber Sciences.

The university is a $1 billion-plus enterprise with statewide and national reach. In addition to its academic units, the university has an integrated health system, including the Children’s Hospital of Georgia.

A degree from Augusta University is greatly respected. Alumni speak highly of their education, citing factors such as small class sizes, extensive faculty support, and in-depth clinical training.

The university plays a leading role in incorporating technology into the curriculum. Examples include simulation labs, distance- and Internet-based instruction, and customized mobile applications for students and faculty.

More than 1,000 full-time faculty members and approximately 7,000 staff serve the university. Students are taught by some of the most prestigious scientists, clinicians, scholars, and artists in the nation. Faculty members not only convey vital information, but they also conduct extensive research.

A tobacco-free environment, Augusta University has a strong commitment to research. The university fosters interdisciplinary research collaboration and is well known for health care oriented research. Augusta University is committed to developing an equally impressive cyber-oriented research agenda in the near term. The university’s Office of Technology Transfer and Economic Development aggressively cultivates promising research and directly assists in the transfer of breakthroughs to the marketplace.

The university has a growing intercollegiate athletics program. It fields men’s and women’s golf teams in NCAA Division I. In 11 other sports, the Jaguars compete in the Peach Belt Conference in Division II. The Jaguars have captured several championships, including the men’s golf team’s national championships in 2010 and 2011.

Augusta, Georgia - One of the largest cities in Georgia, Augusta is located on the bank of the Savannah River midway between the Great Smokey Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. A growing city with a metropolitan-area population of around 400,000, it recently was ranked one of the most favorable places to live in Georgia.

The city offers a wide array of cultural, historical, and recreational activities. Museums, opera, theatre, ballet, concerts, historical sites, and professional sports are all available in Augusta.

In April 2017, Forbes Magazine recognized Augusta as one of seven cities - along with Washington D.C., Silicon Valley, Tel Aviv, Boston, London, and Atlanta - that could become the World’s Cybersecurity Capital.

The city is home to Fort Gordon, a large, multi-mission, multi-service military installation providing base services and support across a wide spectrum of training, operational and soldier sustainment needs. Among its regional and worldwide missions are military intelligence and cyber operations. The installation is home to the U.S. Army Cyber Center of Excellence, NSA Georgia, U.S. Cyber Protection Brigade, and future home of the U.S. Army Cyber Command.

Nearby are the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site (SRS) and nuclear electric generating facility Plant Vogtle.

Major cities and favorite Southern destinations are only a short drive away: 1 hour to Columbia, SC; 2 hours to Atlanta, Ga.; 2.25 hours to Savannah, Ga., and 2.5 hours to Charleston, S.C.
