About the Position: Applications are invited for one tenure-track position that will be a joint appointment between the Computer Science Department and the Science, Math, and Technology Education (SMATE) program at Western Washington University (WWU). These positions will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will begin in September 2018. The Computer Science Department and the SMATE program support Western’s mission to bring together individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in an inclusive, student-centered university that develops the potential of learners and the well-being of communities. About the Computer Science Department / SMATE: The state of Washington and WWU have devoted increasing funds over the past few years to expand the Computer Science Department because of increased student interest and tremendous state need. We are looking for faculty excited by the prospect of shaping our department’s future and contributing to its sustained excellence. Currently the department offers an ABET-accredited B.S. degree and an M.S. degree. Reflecting our department’s commitment to diversity, the CS/M Scholars Program at WWU is focused on supporting women and underrepresented minorities. The program is funded by a $1,000,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. We are also an Academic Alliance member of the National Center for Women in Information Technology (NCWIT) and are part of NCWIT’s Pacesetters program.


SMATE currently includes 10 faculty members with joint appointments in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geology, and the Woodring College of Education. These faculty work collaboratively in teaching and research. SMATE offers interdisciplinary B.A. and Masters in Teaching degree programs for future elementary and secondary teachers and has an established history of leading and supporting systemic science education reform efforts in Washington State and nationally.

Western Washington University is located in scenic Bellingham, Washington, a town of about 80,000 residents nestled between the mountains of the North Cascades and the waters of Puget Sound. Recreational opportunities abound nearby including biking, skiing, hiking, sailing, kayaking, and mountaineering. Bellingham is roughly 60 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia, and 90 miles north of Seattle, Washington, each with a lively cosmopolitan atmosphere and home to many leading technology companies.


Position Responsibilities: The ideal candidate will help to expand SMATE’s reach by incorporating computer science into Western’s science and mathematics teacher preparation programs. The teaching load will be distributed between courses offered in computer science and courses offered in SMATE.  An active research program in computer science education is expected. It is also anticipated that the successful candidate will support collaborations within and between the SMATE program and the Computer Science Department.  This faculty member will also be expected to participate in service activities, including departmental committees and student advising. Participation in planning or facilitation of summer professional development programs for K-12 teachers, specifically focusing on the Washington’s new K-12 computer science endorsement, with the possibility of summer salary, is strongly encouraged.


Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree by hire date in Computer Science, Computer Science Education or a related field, OR a doctorate in Science Education with graduate level course work in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Ability to teach CS at the undergraduate level.
  • Ability to develop a quality research program in undergraduate or K-12 computer science education.
  • Commitment to engage in curricular development at the undergraduate levels.
  • Commitment to contribute to the department’s mission to support underrepresented students.
  • Commitment to secure external funding for research
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate or K-12 level
  • K-12 teacher preparation experience
  • Interest in working with K-12 teachers and classrooms
