BARRIS PROFESSOR AND CHAIR OF THE COMPUTER SCIENCE DIVISION
EVANSTON, ILLINOIS

Northwestern University and its McCormick School of Engineering seek a strategic and innovative leader to serve as the inaugural Peter & Adrienne Barris Professor of Computer Science and Chair of the Computer Science Division (“Chair”). The Chair will join the Division (“CS”) at a time of dramatic growth: Northwestern has embarked on an ambitious campaign to expand and transform computer science: 20 new tenure-track positions will be filled in the next 5+ years, and the University's investment in CS is expected to exceed $150 million. The Division will be moving into a new home on campus in Fall 2018 as part of an integrated laboratory and information space. With these resources, and working with colleagues within CS and across the University, the Chair will have the opportunity to develop a powerful and purposeful role for computer science at one of the nation's foremost private universities.

Ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 2017 among the top 35 computer science programs, the Computer Science Division is home to 32 full-time faculty, 107 Ph.D. students, 72 MS students, and over 450 undergraduate majors. It is nationally and internationally recognized for technological innovation. Areas of particular strength include artificial intelligence and machine learning, human-computer interaction, programming languages, robotics, systems and networking, and theory. Northwestern is an extraordinarily collaborative and fertile intellectual environment. Faculty and students in computer science work with colleagues across the University in arts and sciences, business, education, journalism, law, medicine, and music, testing disciplinary boundaries and pursuing novel approaches to extend the range and impact of computer science.

Reporting to the Dean of the McCormick School and working with the faculty and staff across the School and University, the next Chair will shape the Division's future; attract the finest faculty, staff, and students; identify areas for investment; pursue and strengthen cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary efforts in research and education; champion the work of the Division; and oversee the maturation of the Division's organizational structure. The University seeks a Chair who combines outstanding achievements in computer science with effective leadership, entrepreneurial imagination and ambition, collaborative and creative strength, outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, and a passion for the mission of the Division, the School, and the University.
