SummaryThe Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) at St. Olaf College invites applications for a full-­time, tenure-­track position in Computer Science at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to begin in August 2018. We seek candidates who are committed to the discipline of computer science, and have the energy and enthusiasm to teach a wide range of undergraduate courses in computer science, emphasizing hands-­on pedagogy, team projects, incorporation of forward-­looking technologies, and interdisciplinary applications. We welcome candidates interested in mentoring undergraduate researchers and in supporting women and other underrepresented populations in computer science.

Description: The computer science program at St. Olaf is part of an integrated department. MSCS mathematicians, statisticians, and computer scientists believe we can better address modern mathematical, statistical, computational, data, and computing needs working as a whole rather than as separate departments. The computer science program encourages team projects and mentored undergraduate research that interact with a broad variety of disciplines at the college; a new tenure-­track colleague will contribute to such efforts.

Completion of a Ph.D. in an area of computer science is strongly preferred by September 1, 2018. We will consider all areas of specialization.  We encourage applications from persons who bring diversity to our computer science program, including women and other underrepresented groups, and we expect any successful candidate to help advance our program’s efforts to increase access and opportunities for underrepresented populations in computer science.

Teaching responsibilities include computer science courses at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, periodically including courses in the candidate’s area of scholarly interest, courses that incorporate undergraduate research, and opportunities to teach interdisciplinary courses. The normal teaching load is six courses per year.

About MSCS at St. Olaf. Our department includes thriving programs in mathematics, statistics, computer science, mathematics education, and mathematical biology. While maintaining disciplinary rigor, we promote interactions and synergy among MSCS programs and across the college. Our Center for Interdisciplinary Research, for example, is a nationally recognized program that pairs MSCS faculty and students with faculty and students from other disciplines “to share in the excitement and challenge of working across the traditional academic boundaries to collaborate on research.” Possibilities abound for collaborative research; projects involving undergraduates are supported by St. Olaf’s Collaborative Undergraduate Research and Inquiry program. The computer science program especially encourages undergraduate research: every senior computer science major completes an undergraduate research project. The St. Olaf mathematics program is among the largest and most successful at American undergraduate institutions, annually graduating about 70 mathematics majors. The statistics program is also vibrant, with 4 tenured statisticians and approximately 30 statistics concentrators each year.
