The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor, in Smart City Transportation Systems.

We seek an innovative scholar and colleague to join a new Departmental Smart Cities Initiative. Applicants are sought who can demonstrate accomplishment and outstanding research and teaching potential relating to the development of transformational mobility systems, as a foundation for Smart Cities of the future. We particularly seek applicants in the areas of Automated, Shared and Connected Mobility Systems, and Big Data and New Urban Mobility Analytics Paradigms, for the movement of people or goods. Applicants should have an interest in interdisciplinary transportation research and in building collaborations with colleagues across other disciplines in the Department, School, and campus, as well as in the public and private sectors. The successful applicant will benefit from the new UCI Transformational Mobility Living Laboratory (TML2), led by the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS) at UCI. TML2 is a unique partnership between some of the nation’s most accomplished researchers in transportation at UCI (from fields such as engineering, computer science, economics, urban planning, law and public health), and visionary practitioners and stakeholders in the public and private sectors. ITS serves as a focal point for the highly successful transportation research and education enterprise on the UCI campus, involving over two dozen faculty and supporting over 70 graduate students.

Applicants must have a doctorate in civil engineering, or a closely related field such as another engineering discipline, computer science, operations research or statistics (by the time of appointment). The successful applicant will be expected to develop a vigorous externally funded transportation research program, maintain a strong publication record, advise and mentor students, provide outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, maintain a strong professional service record, and contribute intellectual and academic leadership to advance the transportation systems engineering program within the department and the university. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to increasing the number of students (especially underrepresented minority students) pursuing graduate degrees in transportation-related programs.

Applications should include a cover letter, a description of research and teaching interests, including ability to contribute to departmental and interdisciplinary programs, curriculum vitae, a statement describing commitment to diversity, and the names and contact information of at least four references. References will not be contacted until later stages of consideration, in consultation with the candidate. Applications received by February 1, 2018 will be given full consideration although the search will remain open until the position is filled. Applications should be submitted electronically at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/apply/JPF04410
