Come join us in Boston at the VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS), New England's premier referral center for Veterans' healthcare. VABHS is the largest recipient of VA research funds in the nation, was named among the Top 100 Places to Work by the Boston Globe, and is affiliated with Harvard Medical School and Boston University. Our research group at the VA Boston Healthcare System has an open position for a full-time research Program Manager. The position will lead the coordination of our efforts to execute high-impact clinical and data science research that expands understanding of human health and improves healthcare outcomes for Veterans, with a particular focus on Veterans with cancer. The program manager will actively collaborate with computer scientists, statisticians, and clinicians.

The VA exists as the nation’s largest integrated healthcare system, with abundant data from electronic health records, administrative claims, and genetic/molecular databases. Projects the program manager will be involved with include (but are not limited to):

  • Using the latest machine learning and statistical techniques to study cancer and outcomes
  • Mining and analyzing important variables from the national VA database
  • Studying treatment effects in real-world populations, including older and frail Veterans not studied in clinical trials
  • Developing clinical decision support tools to optimize care provided by VA clinicians

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Close collaboration with other staff across the VA
  • Research manuscript preparation (with opportunities for co-authorship)
  • Meeting planning and scheduling
  • Performing literature searches
  • Preparation of project documents and tracking project deadlines
  • Preparing and drafting correspondence
  • Grant applications and reports. Managing grant activities and budgets.
  • Support for editorial activities
  • Transcribing
  • Proofreading
  • Telephone support and triaging
  • Preparing and maintaining paper and electronic Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions and documentation, and other required regulatory documentation

Skills required:

  • Interest in participating as a key team member of an active academic medical research group, and willingness to provide strong communication support to facilitate effective collaboration among team members
  • Excellent Windows-based and bibliographic software skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Endnote
  • Must be able to do bibliographic searches with PubMed, Google Scholar, etc.
  • Must know or have the ability to learn LaTeX, BibTeX, and Overleaf for document preparation
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Experience in an academic or editorial office role
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work, work independently, and meet deadlines for routine requests and information




  • MUST be a US Citizen and MUST clear a US government background check
  • Resume must indicate full-time or part-time for each position listed under work experience. Part-time positions should also include # of hours.
  • Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.
