The Integrated Innovation Institute (III) at Carnegie Mellon University's Silicon Valley campus in Mountain View, CA seeks an adjunct professor for the User Experience (UX) & Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) course in the spring 2021 term, Mini 4 – March to May 2021, over a period of 8 weeks. This position would teach students primarily within the Master of Science in Software Management (MSSM) program. The specific teaching times are flexible (daytime or evening options) to accommodate the instructor's full-time job schedule, in coordination with the program and campus schedules. 

The UX & HCI course is meant to provide a graduate-level foundation of the Design Thinking process and the various UX disciplines and methods for research and design so that students will be able to: 

  • apply modern user-centered design approaches in professional practice;
  • have a practical and theoretical HCI/UX foundation on which to build upon;
  • understand the proper value of research and design in product development;
  • partner and communicate with HCI and UX experts;  
  • advocate for user experience principles and priorities in your professional practice;  
  • build upon a strong theoretical and practical foundation in HCI/UX to design delightful product and service innovations. 

Responsibilities include developing course syllabus and teaching materials, delivering lectures and critique, creating and grading assignments, coaching/mentoring individuals and teams, facilitating discussions, and creating a safe yet rigorous environment for learning and growth. 

This course is part of the MSSM required curriculum, which prepares product managers, entrepreneurs, and innovation-minded professionals to meet the rapidly-changing demands of the software industry.  Details about the full curriculum are at www.cmu.edu/iii/degrees/mssm/curriculum.html.

The MS in Software Management is a professional degree in software management, innovation and entrepreneurship; it is part of the Integrated Innovation Institute (III) at Carnegie Mellon University, which brings together engineering, business and design. Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have teaching experience and a demonstrable pedagogical philosophy appropriate for graduate college level teaching. They will also have professional work experience with the end-to-end User Experience process, demonstrating the practical application of UX methods within industry, with a strong point of view on the UX discipline and practice. Skills should include a broad UX foundation including design thinking, user research, interaction design, interface design, prototyping, and UI writing – coupled with the ability to teach and demonstrate those skills. Demonstrated strong written, oral, and visual communication skills are greatly preferred.
