The University of Mary Washington (UMW) invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the assistant or associate professor level in computer science to begin August 17, 2021.

Our first position is in the area of cybersecurity. The University of Mary Washington is part of the northern Virginia hub of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI), a network comprised of the region’s universities, colleges, as well as private, nonprofit, and government organizations, all sharing a commitment to building capacity in cybersecurity and advancing cybersecurity research. At UMW we bring a liberal arts focus to the cybersecurity field, maintaining research while working with eager undergraduate students in small classes and in one-on-one mentoring settings. The successful applicant would work on cybersecurity-related research while collaborating with the Director of Cybersecurity to develop more fully the recently created cybersecurity undergraduate program at UMW. This would include the opportunity to contribute to teaching and the development of new or innovative pedagogy. The position will hold the title of CCI Faculty Fellow while engaging with the larger CCI research and education community.

For our second position, passionate teachers in all subdisciplines of computer science will be considered. Those with a research interest in data science, security, information assurance, or cryptography are especially encouraged to apply.

Requirements

For both positions, candidates must either have earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field or ABD with substantial progress toward completing her/his dissertation. Candidates with a research interest in security, information assurance, cryptography, or other cybersecurity-related field are encouraged to apply for our first position. Successful applicants for either position will demonstrate an enthusiasm for teaching at the undergraduate level, the ability to teach a variety of computer science topics, and an interest in involving undergraduates in research. While the normal teaching load is three sections per semester in small classes, the CCI Faculty Fellow is expected to teach two courses per semester while maintaining an active program of mentoring undergraduate research students. For either position, the successful applicants will demonstrate an enthusiasm for contributing to UMW in both research and undergraduate education.

Faculty are expected to engage in scholarly/professional development; perform service in support of the students, the program, and the institution; and be committed to continuous curricular enhancement in response to changing needs and expectations. Candidates must also have effective oral and written communication skills. Successful candidates must demonstrate teaching experience and excellence in teaching in an inclusive environment that embraces diverse talents and backgrounds.

UMW is a public liberal arts and sciences university dedicated to effective teaching and the integration of undergraduate students in research. The Department offers majors in Computer Science and Cybersecurity, as well as minors in Cybersecurity and Data Science.  Recently recognized as a “Great College to Work For” by the Chronicle of Higher Education, UMW is centrally located between Washington, DC and Richmond, VA, in close proximity to many government labs and private engineering firms offering opportunities for collaborative research and student internship opportunities.

The preferred deadline for applications is December 31, 2020.  The University of Mary Washington accepts only completed online applications.  Faxed, mailed, or e-mailed applications will not be considered.

In a continuing effort to enrich its academic environment and provide equal educational and employment opportunities, the University of Mary Washington actively encourages women, minorities, disabled individuals, and veterans to apply.
