The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 9-month, Tenure Track Assistant Professor position in Computer Science. Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; however, higher rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.The person who fills this position is assigned to work at Oregon State University - Cascades, located in Bend, Oregon.

The Computer Science Program at OSU-Cascades teaches a broad range of undergraduate computer science courses that include introductory computer science, software engineering, data structures, mobile application development, web development, cloud application development, usability engineering, analysis of algorithms, startup entrepreneurship, database management systems, programming languages, and machine learning. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research, obtain grants, and collaborate with existing research programs in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Engineering at OSU-Corvallis and local industry.

OSU-Cascades, located in Bend, Oregon, is a branch campus of Oregon State University. Established in 2001, the university currently enrolls more than 1,200 students in bachelor's and master's degree programs. The campus expanded to a four-year university in 2015, opened its 10-acre campus in fall 2016, and the Oregon legislature approved additional funding in 2017 and 2018 for continued campus expansion, which is currently in progress. The branch campus has ambitious enrollment goals to reach 3,000 students by 2025 and is engaged in building a culturally diverse and community-centric educational environment.

Faculty at OSU-Cascades are committed to undergraduate student success. We seek faculty who have evidence of educating and mentoring a diverse group of learners, which may include experience with sponsoring student research or internships, developing study abroad opportunities, service learning courses, or the use of innovation pedagogies such as hybrid or online learning. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2019.

Position Duties:

  • 60% Teaching and related duties
    • Teaching a broad range of undergraduate courses in Computer Science particularly in the area of software engineering.
  • 30% Research and Scholarly activities
    • Research, scholarship, mentoring students, and management of multidisciplinary research programs.
  • 10% Service
    • Service to OSU-Cascades, the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, College, or University. Participate in regional and national professional service activities.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have earned a PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline prior to position start date.
  • Demonstrated ability or significant potential for excellent teaching
  • Demonstrated ability or significant potential for innovative research
  • Potential to attract the necessary funding to sustain a vigorous research program.
  • Significant potential to develop a research program that can be supported by the existing infrastructure at OSU-Cascades or in collaboration with OSU-Corvallis or industry.
  • Proven oral and written communication skills.
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, as evident through previous experience sponsoring student research or internships, developing service learning courses, use of innovative pedagogies or efforts towards enhancing equity and inclusion in the classroom/teaching environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Postdoctoral and/or industry experience.
  • Experience in and commitment to undergraduate teaching.
  • Potential for innovative and applied research in the College of Engineering's signature research areas.
  • Research in the field of software engineering, computer science education, machine learning, cyber security, or Internet of Things.
