Assistant Professor of Computer Science Position, Tenure-Track
Available in the Department of Computer Science


Responsibilities: The Department of Computer Science at the University of Mount Union invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Computer Science, to begin August 1, 2019. This position is directly related to the University's strategic plan, the addition of Computer and Electrical Engineering programs, and the growth of the department. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the computer science curriculum, in the general education program, and in cross-disciplinary courses. Experience in mentoring underrepresented populations in STEM fields is desired. In addition to teaching, candidates will be expected to contribute to the discipline's body of knowledge in a specific area of computer science research or pedagogy. Additional expectations include professional development and scholarly activity, service to the department and the University, and the greater community.

Qualifications: PhD in Computer Science or related degree. ABD will be considered.

Available: August 1, 2019

Compensation: Competitive, based on qualifications. Fringe benefits include a 10% contribution by the University to TIAA after one year of service; contribution by the University toward hospitalization, major medical, disability, and group life insurance; tuition exchange for qualified dependents.

Academic Rank: Assistant Professor (Tenure-track)

Descriptive Information: The University of Mount Union, a private institution founded in 1846, offers a rigorous and relevant academic program that is grounded in the liberal arts tradition. Mount Union's 2,200 students can select from 62 broad-based and career-specific undergraduate majors as well as graduate programs in physician assistant studies, physical therapy, and educational leadership. Known for its personal approach, the institution boasts a 13:1 student-faculty ratio and a curriculum delivered by dedicated faculty members, the vast majority of whom hold terminal degrees in their fields.

Mount Union's Department of Computer Science offers majors in computer science and multi-platform software development, with approximately 40 students in these majors last year. The Department also offers minors in computer science, database management, computer and network security, and web design. Currently, there are three full-time faculty members in the Department and this position will add a fourth. Many courses meet in a computer teaching lab reserved for the department's exclusive use, providing effective support for a hands-on instructional approach.

Over the past 10 years, nearly $110 million has been invested in the construction and renovation of modern facilities, including a recreation center, apartment-style housing options, a health and medical sciences facility and performing arts center. Primarily residential in nature, Mount Union's picturesque 123-acre campus is located in Alliance, OH (population 23,000), within 80 miles of both Cleveland and Pittsburgh. An additional 162-acre Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center is located six miles away. The University's endowment is in excess of $142 million.
