The Computer Science department at the University of Southern Maine (usm.maine.edu/cos) invites applicants for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level. We welcome applicants in all areas of specialization, but especially encourage candidates with research interests in Machine Learning, Distributed Systems, or Software Engineering to apply. Teaching responsibilities typically include core computer science courses and advanced courses related to the candidate’s area of expertise.

Information science has been identified as a key area for growth by the Maine government and the university is investing in research and instruction to meet the need. Department expansion will permit the resumption of the MS in Computer Science degree, the addition of an MS in Data Science degree, and collaborations on other degrees.

The successful candidate will join a department and institution that care deeply about student academic success and the development of faculty to be effective teachers. The department regularly shares observations about classroom performance as part of ABET accreditation and mentors junior faculty. The university provides a variety of programs and financial support for faculty to improve their pedagogical skills.

Criteria for tenure include scholarship publishable in scientific, peer-reviewed outlets. It is highly desirable to engage students in research projects and activities. The university provides incentives and assistance for the preparation of grant applications and article submissions.

The USM Service Promise is “Student Focused Every Day” and we are looking for a faculty member who shares the commitment to that and to its associated practices of respect & care, integrity, equity and responsiveness.

We are the University of Everyone – a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students. We welcome applicants who are multi-lingual. Women, minorities, individuals with disabilities and veterans are encouraged to apply.

Required: PhD awarded by the time the appointment begins
