Description

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a tenure-track position in Computer Science to begin July 1, 2022. Candidates in all areas of computer science are encouraged to apply.

Founded as Hobart College for men and William Smith College for women, Hobart and William Smith Colleges today are a highly selective residential liberal arts institution with a single administration, faculty and curriculum but separate dean’s offices, student governments, athletic programs and traditions. The Colleges are located in a small diverse city in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. With an enrollment of approximately 1,800, the Colleges offer 62 different majors and minors from which students choose two areas of concentration. Creative and extensive programs of international study and public service are also at the core of the Colleges’ mission. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at HWS values the teaching of diverse learners from diverse backgrounds.

The teaching load is five courses annually, distributed over two semesters. Candidates will teach courses across the undergraduate computer science curriculum and will have the opportunity to develop new courses in subfields related to their areas of interest. Candidates should be able to teach core courses using Java as the language of instruction. Participation in the Colleges' general curriculum and mentoring of students in undergraduate research are strongly encouraged. Experience with and/or interest in working in a multicultural environment and encouraging full participation in computer science from students with diverse backgrounds and experiences are highly desirable. Evidence of ongoing research potential and a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching are essential. Candidates from historically underrepresented backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Applications are encouraged to be completed by October 22, but applications will continue to be accepted until the position is filled. Application materials should be submitted via Interfolio: https://apply.interfolio.com/94857. The following materials are required for the initial application: a cover letter; a detailed CV; a teaching statement; a research statement; and a diversity statement that addresses the applicant’s commitment to attracting and supporting a diverse student population.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges is an equal opportunity employer that strives for full inclusion of diverse communities. We are committed to providing a non-discriminatory and harassment-free educational, living and working environment for all members of the HWS community, including students, faculty, staff, volunteers, and visitors. HWS prohibits discrimination and harassment in their programs and activities on the basis of age, color, disability, domestic violence victim status, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other status protected under the law. Discrimination on the basis of sex includes sexual harassment, sexual violence, sexual assault, and other forms of sexual misconduct including stalking and intimate partner violence, and gender-based harassment that does not involve conduct of a sexual nature.

Requirements

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in computer science or an equivalent field, or be expected to defend their dissertation in such a field by August 2022.
