Executive Director - Institute for Cyber Operations

The University of North Georgia is seeking an Executive Director for the new Institute for Cyber Operations, a Senior Military College DOD Cyber Institute. The Executive Director will have two primary roles: (1) provide leadership to develop a campus-wide cyber education ecosystem on campus with outreach into the region served by the University of North Georgia and (2) serve as the UNG lead for the Senior Military Colleges (SMC) Department of Defense (DOD) Cyber Institutes grant program. This 12-month position is available beginning February 1, 2021, with the official start date negotiable.

Federally designated as a senior military college, one of the university's signature leadership programs is its 800-member Corps of Cadets on UNG's Dahlonega Campus.


  • Lead visioning, strategic planning and implementation to continue to elevate the UNG cyber program as a leader in the field of cybersecurity, including securing funding, building capabilities, and enhancing the production of the next generation of talent for the industry.
  • Proactively develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with internal and external groups, including university senior leadership at UNG and at other universities, high-ranking government officials and defense contractors (especially at the DOD and NSA), C-suite executives, and advisory boards to ensure the activities of the Institute are relevant, leading edge, valued and productive.
  • Facilitate the development and delivery of innovative research projects to expand the research portfolio at UNG in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, while advancing the knowledge and applications in these fields.
  • Teach undergraduate, graduate, and/or executive education courses related to cyber security and related topics, as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Systems Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Information Systems or closely related field and/or commensurate experience.
  • At minimum of 10 years of experience in the cybersecurity or closely related field and five years in senior leadership roles in government or industry related to cybersecurity; Experience managing complex projects and in negotiating for and securing funding for projects.
  • Experience interacting with personnel from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Experience inspiring and leading complex initiatives involving multidisciplinary teams to achieve high-level goals; experience in building successful programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Secret or TS/SCI Clearance, preferred
  • Have experience either in applied cybersecurity in defense/national security or in the role of PI or Co- PI on research-funded projects.
  • Experience in obtaining and successfully completing externally funded projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting or facilitating research projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of cybersecurity practices and challenges; ability and willingness to work collaboratively with administrators, faculty, and staff from a variety of disciplines, universities, government agencies, and industry; interest in and/or demonstrated ability to conduct research and lead project groups that can include faculty, students, and staff; skill at effective communication, both orally and in writing.
