Description

Brookhaven National Laboratory is looking for the next leader of its Scientific Data and Computing Center (SDCC), a facility hosting one of the 10 largest scientific data archives in the world as well as providing computing and data services for world-leading scientific facilities (RHIC, LHC ATLAS, Belle II, NSLS-II, CFN).   Additionally, the new leader will be called upon to help design next generation data and computing services for groundbreaking experimental facilities such as the planned Electron-Ion Collider and others.Delivering data and compute services to a worldwide science community via cutting edge network and data transfer services over 400 Gbps network links, the three-years-young 60,000 square foot data center provides significant expansion potential for future initiatives.

The SDCC serves all BNL science, as well as the Department of Energy’s (DOE) national and international mission. A key mission area for SDCC is the support of BNL’s and DOE’s extensive High Energy Physics and Nuclear Physics portfolio. The director of the SDCC oversees data and computing infrastructure services for data-intensive programs geographically distributed across BNL, and other research Labs in the United States, Europe, and Japan. The SDCC operates large-scale computing systems encompassing High-Throughput Computing (HTC), High-Performance Computing (HPC), and specialized AI workloads.

The ideal candidate will balance the dynamic needs of SDCC users while maintaining a strong business sense, positioning the SDCC as a critical computing and storage resource for all BNL and DOE science initiatives. Integral to this role is the creation of a vision and path forward for this complex environment, including compute, storage, data management, software infrastructure, collaborative research support, and expansion opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of about 40 FTEs, supporting programs in Nuclear and Particle Physics (RHIC, ATLAS experiment at CERN, Belle II experiment in Japan, DUNE at Fermilab), institutional computing, modeling and simulations for QCD, materials science, climate, and other application areas

  • Provide technical and oversight responsibility for computing with a primary focus of providing researchers with cutting-edge computational resources, technologies, and support

  • Help drive and shape the future of scientific computing at BNL positioning SDCC as a lab-wide facility, addressing the needs of data-intensive computing

  • Guide the ongoing evolution of the SDCC as a National-level scientific computing facility, fully integrated in the computing landscape of DOE

  • Develop and implement long-term strategic plans and technical roadmaps while balancing resource allocations to meet the evolving needs of the scientific community

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership that will help optimize computing resources, ensure data security, and enable groundbreaking scientific discoveries

  • Balance the competing requirements of multiple scientific disciplines and their respective computing, storage, and data requirements, leveraging team expertise and collaboration opportunities to optimize service offerings

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, physics or related Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) discipline plus 15 years of relevant experience, OR

    • Master’s degree in computer science, physics or related STEM discipline plus 12 years of relevant experience (as defined above), OR

    • PhD in computer science, physics or related STEM discipline plus 10 years relevant experience (as defined above).

  • Demonstrated success in building and leading high-performance teams of scientists or technical staff for scientific computing, including search and selection, development, and mentorship

  • Experience in computing capacity planning, scheduling, and seamless integration of resources

  • Familiarity with the latest technology and best practices for building and supporting HTC and HPC with an interest in staying abreast of technology shifts

  • A track record of demonstrated organizational, managerial and leadership skills in the context of a major scientific or technical project

  • Experience managing a complex, multi-disciplinary computing facility or technical services supporting scientists and researchers

  • Ability to manage technical and business support requirements while proactively developing new growth opportunities for the facility

  • Ability to participate in scientific discussions, including strategic and planning sessions

  • Strong demonstrated skills in oral, written, and interpersonal skills across a wide range of technical, scientific, and support staff in an international and multicultural organization

  • Demonstrated commitment to practices that foster a progressive and inclusive DEIA culture

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • An advanced degree in computer science, physics or related Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) discipline

  • Experience supporting large-scale scientific user facilities, including broad understanding of the requirements for various science collaborations, especially the large international collaboration in nuclear and particle physics

  • Demonstrated record of national and international recognition in scientific computing or related areas

  • In-depth knowledge of efficient, modern system HTC/HPC system administration with emphasis on big data management
