The Department of Computer Science at Aalto University – in the top-20 young universities worldwide – invites applications for a tenured position at the Associate or Full Professor level in the area of Data Management. 

We expect the applicants to demonstrate excellence and leadership in research, in addition to high teaching ability. The Department of Computer Science is an internationally-oriented community and home to world-class research in modern computer science, combining research on foundations and innovative applications. With 45 professors and more than 400 employees from 45 countries, it is the largest department at Aalto University and the largest computer science unit in Finland. Requirements and Process

The position is focused on the development of large-scale data systems  and processing needed for modern data-intensive applications. We expect the professor in data management to lead the development of data management research and teaching at Aalto University. Applicants are required to have a doctoral degree in Computer Science and an outstanding track-record in data management research, including publications in top venues (e.g. VLDB, PODS, TODS, TDKE), success in acquiring external funding for research, and demonstrated academic leadership.
Research topics relevant to the position can include but are not limited to:

  • Big data warehouses/analytics systems
  • Distributed and cloud database systems
  • Knowledge and data engineering methodologies and techniques
  • Modern databases, including Non-relational (NoSQL), in-memory, graph and multi-model databases
  • Online, distributed and stream transaction and query processing

The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research achievements in relation to their career stage, their teaching merits and leadership in the scientific community. External reviews will also be used as part of the evaluation. Short-listed applicants will be invited to present and discuss their research with faculty. Evaluation of the applicants follows the tenure track system at Aalto University. A person at any level of the tenure track system is expected to perform world‐class research, to teach, advise and otherwise advance both graduate and undergraduate education, to be an active member of the international scientific community, and to exhibit academic leadership. Career advances on the tenure track are based on scheduled performance assessments, which take into account the candidate’s merits in all these areas.

  3. research statement (recommended length: four pages),
  4. teaching statement (recommended length: four pages),

  6. list of publications with no more than five of them clearly highlighted as the most important.
