Job Summary

The University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research (http://www.isr.umich.edu) seeks a Program Manager to provide leadership and coordination for its data science and big data initiatives, and support for research activities in this area. This full-time position will be located at Ann Arbor, Michigan within the Center for Political Studies (CPS; http://www.isr.umich.edu/cps). CPS offers an innovative and friendly working environment with a focus on professional development and maximizing employee potential. Compensation is expected to be in the range of $75,000 - $105,000 annually, depending on education and experience, and will include the University of Michigan staff fringe benefits package.

50% of the person’s effort will be toward coordination and support of a funded set of data science projects in parenting, political communication, and survey methodology under the banner Social Science and Social Media Collaborative (S3MC). The remaining 50% of effort will be to inventory existing data science and big data projects and interested faculty, staff, and students; develop a community around data science activities in the Institute; identify and implement relevant infrastructure, events, data sources, and training; assist faculty in proposals and raising funding for new research initiatives; and coordinate and support additional research activities as assigned. The position will also be responsible for project management, including detailing scope and requirements, problem-solving, reporting on progress, disseminating results, adhering to sponsor requirements and expectations, and meeting deadlines. The selected candidate will partner with data science personnel and organizations both within and external to the University of Michigan. This includes participation in strategic planning; defining and implementing organization-wide resources; and overseeing communication, websites, social media, and conveying the value and importance of data science to the broader public.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated, have the ability to multi-task and juggle multiple projects effectively, be able to initiate and drive projects with minimal guidance, and be effective in collaborating with teams of individuals with diverse backgrounds, knowledge, skills, and experience. They will also be intellectually curious and able to describe complicated research, technology, and techniques in a way that is accessible to a general audience. They will have strong empirical and quantitative analysis skills, as well as the ability to communicate the results of analysis both statistically and through visualizations. Last, they will be savvy with technology and able to discuss, understand and make decisions about complex technical and logistical issues.

Required Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a Master’s Degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, social science, or other relevant quantitative field with some coursework in data science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of and experience with data science tools and techniques. Project and program management experience in an innovative environment, including the management of multiple projects at one time. Experience in managing and mentoring other team members both formally and informally. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral.

Desired Qualifications

Desired qualifications include a PhD in a relevant discipline; prior experience in a data science or big data workplace; exposure to large scale systems, big data, and/or high-performance computing; experience with one or more of the following: big data analytics, machine learning, large datasets, and/or distributed computing (Hive, Hadoop); knowledge of and interest in the social sciences; experience in the use of one or more statistical packages such as R, SAS, SPSS, and Stata; and experience in Python or other programming languages.
