Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Cybersecurity/Computer Science Studies
Interdisciplinary Cluster Hire focused on Human Security

The College of Arts & Sciences (COAS) at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University—Worldwide (ERAU-W) announces an exciting new initiative for strategic interdisciplinary growth in the area of Human Security. In support of this initiative, COAS is forming a cluster of new tenure-track Assistant Professor positions that, combined with existing faculty, will promote ERAU-W as a national leader in this area.

The faculty in this new interdisciplinary cluster will have the opportunity to engage with colleagues across multiple disciplines to advance the body of knowledge associated with emergency services and communication, providing a fertile environment for faculty collaboration and excellence in scholarship. Specifically, COAS is seeking faculty who will contribute original research that advances theory, concepts, practice, and/or knowledge in the broadly-defined area of human security. This integrated faculty cluster will uniquely incorporate expertise associated with several diverse, yet interrelated, fields of study. For example, it is essential to understand the interrelationship between cybersecurity and human factors when monitoring risks that have the potential to harm employees or impact the reputation of an organization. Also vital to effective crisis management is the comprehension of both the psychology and the practical realities of communicating with emergency responders from multiple generations and culturally diverse agencies. Industry leaders must be equipped to respond to crises and effectively mitigate hazards, improve disaster response, and interact with homeland security. Subject matter expertise of selected candidates, in collaboration with existing faculty, will be used to investigate these critical social issues while also engaging colleagues across COAS in the development of supporting interdisciplinary courses and degree programs that transcend individual disciplines.

In support of this initiative, COAS invites applicants for six tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in the following disciplinary areas across four departments:

English, Humanities & Communication
Crisis/Risk Communication Studies (1 position)

Mathematics, Physical & Life Sciences OR Security & Emergency Services
Cybersecurity/Computer Science (2 positions)

Security & Emergency Services
Emergency Services (2 positions)

Social Sciences & Economics
Industrial/Organizational Psychology (1 position)

Successful candidates for these highly interdisciplinary positions will have the opportunity to integrate the work of the cluster with existing collaborative entities, such as the new COAS Virtual Center for Excellence in Communication Studies and the developing COAS National Center for Investigations in Emergency Services. New faculty will support existing and planned degree programs in Communication, Cybersecurity, Emergency Services, and related areas while also establishing a record of excellence in scholarship that demonstrates a promising and ongoing research trajectory. Specifically, the successful candidates will be able to support research initiatives and academic programs in one or more of the following areas: communication, computer science, corporate social responsibility, cybersecurity, emergency services, human resilience, network analysis, public relations and new media, statistics and analytics, psychology, and smart technologies. Ideal candidates will have both academic and career experience that will enable them to investigate real issues at the crosssection of these disciplinary areas.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Worldwide
The College of Arts & Sciences currently offers four bachelor’s and two master’s degrees, with more planned for the near future. In addition to degree programs, COAS provides over 2,000 sections of general education courses as part of every degree program within ERAU-W, with a focus on developing students’ critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, information literacy, communication, scientific literacy, cultural literacy, and lifelong personal growth skills. The Worldwide campus enrolls over 23,000 students, delivering courses globally online, synchronously to both homes and classrooms, face-to-face at over 130 locations, and in blended formats. ERAU-W earned the #1 ranking in 2017 for Best Online Bachelor’s programs from U.S. News & World Report.

Position and Application Requirements
For the advertised position in Cybersecurity/Computer Science Studies, a doctorate in the discipline or a related field is required. Given the applied, interdisciplinary nature of the positions, at least three years of professional experience is highly preferred.

Applications are being reviewed now, and review of applications will continue until the positions are filled; expected start date is August 2019. Applications should include a current CV and a detailed letter discussing faculty experience, academic qualifications, and background that demonstrate a fit with COAS and the position. Candidates are required to secure three professional letters of recommendation as part of the application process, to be submitted confidentially by the references to the Search Committee Chair. Application materials should be submitted electronically at https://careers.erau.edu/. Questions and professional letters of recommendation can be directed via email to Dr. Tom Sieland, COAS Associate Dean and Search Committee Chair, at sielandt@erau.edu.
