The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin seeks applicants for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the area of smart homes and smart health. Specifically, we seek an engineer or scientist who views smart homes as hosts for intelligent agents that can monitor and understand health, environment, and behavior. Potential research areas include activity recognition, the Internet of Things, cyber-physical-human systems, mobile and wearable computing, infrastructure-mediated sensing, and novel sensing methods. Research experience in deploying such technologies and approaches in real-world settings while following human-centered computing practices is highly desirable.

The successful candidate for this position will be joining the UT Austin faculty as part of the Cluster and Interdisciplinary Hiring Initiative. This initiative is designed to supplement departmentally-based hiring practices and norms and extend collaborative research and scholarship. This new initiative is authorizing up to 40 new faculty hires whose interdisciplinary areas of knowledge cross the boundaries of existing academic departments. The selected candidate will be expected to actively participate as a core member of Whole Communities—Whole Health. Contributions to the cluster will be an important facet of the faculty member’s annual performance evaluations and consideration for promotion/tenure. Whole Communities—Whole Health initiative is also one of UT Austin’s Bridging Barriers research grand challenges. As a highly interdisciplinary effort, Whole Communities--Whole Health is applying cutting edge research related to smart health and smart homes to children and families in underserved communities.

The department and the Cockrell School of Engineering are committed to building a diverse and inclusive environment. We are interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity, inclusion, and equity in higher education through their teaching, research, and service. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Texas at Austin is also committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual-career couples and single parents.

Requirements

Applicants should have received or expect to receive a doctoral degree in engineering, computing, or science prior to September 2020. Applicants should also have research experience or future directions related to smart homes and/or smart health. The position is open-rank, and candidates of all faculty levels (assistant to full professor) are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates are expected to teach a diverse undergraduate and graduate student population, develop a sponsored research program, mentor graduate students, collaborate with other faculty from a wide range of backgrounds, and be involved in service to the university and profession.

All applications must be submitted electronically at apps.ece.utexas.edu/apply.

Interested persons should submit: (1) a cover letter; (2) a current curriculum vita; (3) a statement of research interests and accomplishments; (4) a statement of teaching interests and philosophy; and (5) a statement describing a commitment to promoting diverse and inclusive ideas and environments. For tenured positions, applications should include a minimum of five references who will submit original letters directly to the website. For tenure-track faculty positions (assistant professor level), applications should include names of at least three references.

The successful candidate will be required to complete an Employment Eligibility Verification form and provide documents to verify identity and eligibility to work in the U.S. A security sensitive background check will be conducted on the applicant selected. The University of Texas at Austin is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
