For the Institute for Automation and Applied Computer Science (IAI) / KIT Department of Informatics we are offering as soon as possible a

Tenure Track Professorship (W1)
for Artificial intelligence for the
Energy System

This professorship focuses on the development, analysis and application of artificial intelligence methods for the energy system. It makes essential contributions to KIT and Helmholtz Association research in the field of artificial intelligence and to the realization of the energy system transformation.

The successful applicant should have a scientific background in at least one of the following topics:

  • Learning and Optimization under uncertainty
  • Scalable AI methods and algorithms
  • Robust and methods applicable for distributed energy systems
  • Domain-specific AI methods for complex energy systems
  • Interpretability and explainability of AI methods

The professorship is closely integrated into the Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Unit (www.helmholtz.ai). Within this framework, research questions in the field of energy and transdisciplinary synergies in the development and application of artificial intelligence methods are to be addressed in cooperation with other Helmholtz centres. In addition, KIT offers numerous links to existing research in the field of artificial intelligence.

The professorship contributes to an appropriate extent to the teaching of the KIT Department of Informatics both for the German-language mandatory courses as well as in the elective area. This requires the willingness to learn the German language if necessary. The professorship is associated with a teaching obligation of 4 hours before and 6 hours after the interim evaluation. You will actively shape your research at KIT and your own further development and will independently supervise doctoral candidates and students. In doing so, you will combine a cooperative working method with strong communication skills.

Outstanding scientific achievements are required, for example those achieved in the context of an excellent doctorate. Experience in teaching and in the acquisition of third-party funds is also an advantage. According to § 51 of the Universities Act (Landeshochschulgesetz) of the state of Baden-Württemberg hiring requirements include a university degree, teaching competence, and outstanding scientific competence. The evaluation criteria are according to the "Qualitätssicherungskonzept für Juniorprofessuren mit Tenure-Track am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie". In addition, the evaluation pays special attention to the commitment to the Helmholtz program. An accompanying procedure at KIT is offered for a predictable scientific career development.

Employment will initially be for a period of six years as a temporary civil servant or as an employee (according to “Beurlaubungsmodell” § 15 (2) KITG). An interim evaluation is carried out in the third year of service. If the final tenure evaluation is positive, the successful candidate will be promoted to the rank of tenured full professor (W3) in accordance with § 15 (2) KITG.

KIT is an equal opportunity employer. Women are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered if equally qualified.

KIT is a certified family-friendly university and offers part-time employment, leave of absence due to family reasons, dual-career service and coaching to support the compatibility of work and family life.

Applications with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, credentials, academic career and list of publications) and a perspective paper (maximum of three pages) should be sent by email, preferably compiled into a single PDF document, to dekanat@informatik.kit.edu by October 11th, 2020.

For enquiries regarding this specific position please contact Professor Dr. Bernhard Beckert, email: beckert@kit.edu
