The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) seeks a computational scientist focused advanced simulation, data analysis and/or visual analytics for predictive understanding of complex biological and environmental systems. The EMSL is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science user facility that provides innovative and breakthrough experimental and computational science that addresses DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) programs by providing access to more than 75 state-of-the-art instrumental and high performance computing capabilities. EMSL users address some of the most important molecular-to-mesoscale challenges relevant to DOE missions.

We are hiring Systems Administrator/DevOps - IT Engineers to work as part of a team managing the computers and software which support the collection, management, analysis, publication, and archiving of the data generated by EMSL researchers and partner programs.  This position will work closely with a cross-functional team to meet the needs of a diverse array of scientific computer users, including computational scientists, data scientists, analytical chemists, molecular modelers, and more.  Experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration is desired.  Familiarity with Linux systems administration is required.  Candidates should be comfortable deploying web applications, database management systems, and other software using configuration management tools such as Ansible using continuous integration / continuous deployment tools such as Gitlab CI.  Data management experience, such as operations oversight of 'data warehouse' and 'data lake' deployments, including metadata management, is desired.


Applies engineering and technical principles to the design and development of computer networks, cyber security infrastructure, telecommunications, information technology systems and tools, and database systems. Analyzes, installs, integrates, modifies, and supports all associated systems, networks, software, and databases. Plans and conducts projects after analysis of functional and operational requirements. May consult with and lead cross-functional teams.

  • Work in interdisciplinary teams to design, develop, and implement methods, processes, and systems to analyze complex, high-dimensional, and high-volume data
  • Work in interdisciplinary teams to support existing data management and computational analysis workflows
  • Collaborate with IT and Software Engineers to maintain an improve data management resources, including metadata-specific databases
  • Produce software to support exploratory data analysis from complex and high-dimensional datasets
  • Participate in educational programs for EMSD staff and champion robust, high quality, and sustainable scientific software, and F.A.I.R. practices
  • Participate in an on-call rotation, one week every several weeks

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with container orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes, as well as the ecosystem of technologies commonly used in modern orchestration stacks, such as Ceph, Helm, Docker, Podman, Keycloak, etc

  • Experience in data management and scientific computing, including data warehousing, workflow development, and automation, including common toolsets such as Globus and HPSS

  • Experience in HPC systems administration, including deployment tools like xCAT, Chef, and Ansible; resource management and scheduler tools such as Slurm; parallel filesystems such as Lustre and BeeGFS

  • Experience with software development tools and methodology, especially continuous integration/continuous deployment platforms like GitLab-CI and Jenkins

  • Demonstrated experience in modern software engineering and project management methodologies

  • Working knowledge of data management platforms, ontologies, and metadata management strategies

  • Meaningful experience leading development projects, cross-team collaboration, and project budgeting

  • Excellent communications, interpersonal, teamwork and leadership skills
